About The Maker

About Theo Chocolate

(Seattle, Washington)

Founder Joe Whinney pioneered the supply of organic cocoa beans into the US in 1994. Working in the tropics of Central America and Africa, he fell in love with the land and people farming there. He recognized both were being exploited and wanted to do something about it.

Over the next decade, Joe worked tirelessly to champion organic cocoa beans in the US and promote Fair Trade practices for his colleagues in Central America and Africa. He built lasting relationships and deep trust with farmer groups — all the while focused on the goal of someday making chocolate himself and sharing his passion with the world.

In March 2006, Joe’s dream came to life with Theo’s inaugural run of organic chocolate — the first made here in the US. The name Theo comes from the Greed name of the Cacao tree —Theobroma Cacao, Food of the Gods.
