About The Maker

About Sarah Bak Pottery

(Seattle, Washington)

Sarah was introduced to pottery at an early age, with a mom who collected pottery from every state they visited.  She remembers being mesmerized the first time she saw a potter throw a pot.  Although high school did not offer her the opportunity to take a ceramics class, she was so drawn to the field that she took an independent study. Once in college, she was torn between a love for science and art and after a summer spent interning at Eckels Pottery Shop in Bayfield, Wisconsin she realized she could have both with ceramics.  She spent three summers at Eckels and completed her BFA from Bradley University in 1995.  After years of working in arts related retail and non-profit arts administration she now spends more time focused on her clay and family, including her two kids.

“Functionality is an important aspect of my pottery.  These pots are made to bring some beauty and joy into everyday starting from your morning cup of coffee to a bowl of ice cream at the end of the day.”  Porcelain is her clay of choice, because it is a white canvas for painting and using under glazes, because they behave much like watercolors, once they are fired. All of these pots are high-fired and are dishwasher and microwave safe. Sarah is drawn to nature so you may notice a botanical theme to her pots.  Waves, floral designs, and edibles all figure prominently into her designs.
