About the Fraser River Salmon Run
Starting in late July, one of the greatest salmon runs travels as far as 1000 miles from the ocean to their native northern tributaries of Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada. The fifth largest river in Canada, the river begins in the high altitudes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and spans 850 miles long. It winds through the Fraser River Canyon and greets the Pacific Ocean near Vancouver (just north of SeaBear Smokehouse!). It is a raging, rocky river with white water rapids and all five species of wild salmon. When the salmon are running, it attracts many bald eagles, competing with the fisherman for the deep red meat of the wild salmon. It’s also known across the province for its abundant sturgeon fishing, with anglers traveling far to catch these ancient fish, with trophy sturgeon weighing in up to 1,000 lbs. Together the wild salmon and sturgeon traverse the incredible natural waterway of Fraser River in spectacular British Columbia.
