About Dave Ulmen

(Spokane, Washington)

Ulmen’s grandfather, August Ulmen, had the kind of woodworking shop behind his house that many of that time did. As one who experienced the Great Depression, he created most of the tools and space to use them. Dave became fascinated by his grandfather’s shop, spending hours with his grandfather and father working with tools, wood, and metal. He knew that one day, he would become a woodworker.

After raising a few sons of his own, a home of his own, and a few grey hairs as a middle school teacher, Dave had the opportunity to do his own woodworking. He started out of his garage with tools that his grandfather and father would be envious of, but one thing remained the same: that satisfaction of creating an interesting and useful object that catches the eye.

In 2007-2008, Made in Washington named Dave Ulmen their Artist of the Year.
